Friday, students at Milam Elementary were taught a Texas railroad history lesson by a special guest.

Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush visited the school with replicas of an original map of Texas railroads and cattle that are kept in Austin.

Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush on Monday got an up-close look at Texarkana College as part of his year-long focus on education.

Bush toured portions of the TC campus and met administrators, instructors, and current and former students during one of 30 visits he is making to schools across Texas.

"At the Land Office, we've decided to dedicate this year to education in Texas, knowing that this legislative session would be focused on school funding. I thought it was important as a politician to actually get in the classroom," he said.

TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – The Texas Land Commissioner is continuing his visit to the ArkLaTex.

George P. Bush visited with students and staff at Texas A&M University-Texarkana Tuesday.

Bush toured several buildings on campus, including the new Building for Academic and Student Services, which has a hospital-like learning lab for nursing students.

ROSENBURG, TX – Yesterday, June 26, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush toured Texas State Technical College Fort Bend Campus. The tour included highlights from various program areas where the college trains students to perform skills needed for employment in today’s high tech global economy. Throughout the tour Commissioner Bush saw first hand the skills needed to become a lineman, work in industrial maintenance, electric/power controls and environmental technology. Earlier this year, Commissioner Bush dedicated 2019 to “A Conversation with our Future,” engaging with students, parents and teachers across the state. Innovative education opportunities are needed now more than ever.

Fort Bend County is one of the fastest growing counties in both Texas and the nation. Research shows that approximately 1,349 new workers with engineering-related skills will be needed each year through 2020 to fill positions in the area. It is estimated that there will be 5,920 new positions for mechanics and technicians trained in repair technologies each year through 2020. Texas State Technical College serves our state’s education efforts and ensures that the students of today have the skills needed for the economy of tomorrow.

It was the end of a Texas history lesson from Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, part of his initiative to visit 50 schools across the state. Following a morning stop at Storm Relay Lab Elementary School, Bush presented a lesson to fourth graders at Hillcrest - his 30th visit - centered around a Texas railroad map printed in the 19th century.

“The goal was not only giving a break to a teacher, here early in the season, but learning,” he said. “Visiting with administrators and teachers about their priorities is what public leadership needs to do.”

Commissioner Bush spent Tuesday afternoon at the Del Mar College West Campus visiting the college's work force program and their petrochemical plant simulator. It's where students are able to get hands on experience doing various jobs at a chemical plant or refinery.

Incarnate Word Academy Middle Level students were visited by former U.S. Navy Reserve officer and current Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, on Aug. 23.

During his visit, Commissioner Bush took a tour of the Middle Level classrooms before teaching a map lesson for Middle Level Texas History students in the Library Media Resource Center. Students gathered in small groups and wore gloves while they studied maps used during Bush’s lesson, similar to the way archivists interact with primary source maps.
